Advantages of using a portable sheep shower
- With the business owner operating the mobile sheep shower a professional and proficient use of the machinery and chemicals is ensured.
- It provides a quick solution enabling on average 3000 sheep to be dipped in a day.
- The operator ensures knowledge of the current chemicals and procedures are kept up to date and can advise the client on all areas involved in the process.
- The structure of the machine provides correct rates and adequate pressure; it works on a timer to ensure the correct saturation.
- The operator provides zinc sulphate in the process to prevent the spread of dermatitis.

Hints for making the day run smoothly
- Adequate water is imperative. 3000L is required for start-up followed by suitable water carting facilities or water laid on. Dam water is suitable provided it isn’t too muddy.
- Have gates or panels on hand for lead-up to shower incorporating a small forcing pen.
- Ensure an area to the left of where the machine will be positioned is clear for the sump and truck.
- Try and use a gate where sheep are used to running out of yards.
- You are not required to assist with setting up or packing up of the machine. Use this time to organise sheep and water.
- Ensure that mustering allows for sheep to be waiting and returned to paddocks quickly so as not to have the machine idle.
- You can provide a penner to keep sheep moving through the yards or someone can be provided at rousy wages. Please discuss your preference with us so arrangements can be made.
- The machine catwalk is for the use of the machine operator only. DO NOT use catwalk. Doing so is at your own risk.

Best Practice
- It is preferable to shear all sheep at the one shearing. If this is either not desirable or possible, animals with different shearings must be kept isolated from each other.
- A clean muster at shearing and then at dipping is essential. If any unshorn sheep come in they must be shorn prior to going through the shower.
- Stock proof boundary fences to prevent re-infestation from outside sources is imperative. Closing boundary gates of paddocks used for cropping prevents stray sheep entering properties.
- Pay particular attention to boundary fencing, roadways, creek crossings, drains and timber plantations
- Lice are host specific and cannot live off sheep for very long. Lice are unlikely to be transmitted by wool on posts or fences or picked up from long grass and trees. They can live for up to 3 weeks on a dead sheep.
- Good biosecurity should exist between neighbours. Ask neighbours to inform you of stray sheep. Arrange for collection and treatment before re-introducing. If in doubt, destroy sheep, it is better to sacrifice one sheep than risk a whole flock.
- Adult lice can be transferred in shearers moccasins. Microwave moccasins for 5 minutes.
- Liaise with shearers re quality of shearing. They are your sheep!!!
